Rare and desirable Victorian Campaign Chess Set
A very pleasing example of the Jaques In Statu Quo chess set, one of the most desirable of travelling chess sets ever made. The find brass-mounted mahogany case encloses a board of holly and rosewood set with turned and carved pieces. These ingenious sets incorporate a means of locking and releasing the pieces during play by by pressing buttons set into the case. The board edge is stamped In Statu Quo Chess Board and Jaques & Son, Patentee, London. The design was of course extremely popular; the author Lewis Carroll noted in his diary of the 24th December 1866 ‘I brought out my in statu quo chess-board, and had a game with one of my travelling companions, whilst delayed during a train journey'.
